Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain "Bravery, Sacrifice, Freedom"

SpitfireIt is fitting that the most famous of all of the Royal Air Force WWII fighter stations, RAF Biggin Hill, commemorates the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The Air Fair will include an airfield attack, enhanced through sound pyrotechnics and giant screens, to help recreate the summer of 1940.

Aircrew looking at map in front of SpitfireWe will host a great number of Spitfires, Hurricanes and ME109, the key aircraft of the battle. The backdrop of central London, which can be seen from the airfield, reminds us of the strategic importance of RAF Biggin Hill in the defence of the capital. Surely there can be no better place to commemorate the sacrifice of the few!

RAF Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary 1940-2010The Air Fair has, over the years, hosted some very high profile guests from members of the Royal Family to stars of film and TV. Our very special guests this year will be air and ground crew veterans who served in fighter squadrons during the Battle of Britain.

Those that have visited the RAF Chapel at Biggin Hill will have seen the beautiful panels inscribed with the names of those pilots who paid the supreme sacrifice whilst serving with squadrons based at RAF Biggin Hill.

We are all aware of how diverse London is today, what is not quite so well known is the number of nations whose pilots flew from RAF Biggin Hill during 1940:

  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Czechoslovakia
  • Eire
  • France
  • New Zealand
  • Poland
  • South Africa
  • USA

We have invited representatives and aircraft from some of these nations and hope that they will be able to join us in our commemorations.
