AIR FAIR VISITORS TOP 110,000 IN THE SUNSHINE

Two days of fine weather at the weekend brought a near-record number of visitors to the International Air Fair staged at Biggin Hill, the famous WWII fighter base in Kent. A total of 110.000 spectators witnessed six hours of continuous display performances each day and some unique visual images that traditionally make the annual show a special one.

Highlights on Saturday included the formidable Avro Vulcan B2 V-bomber, flying again after 14 years of dedicated restoration, the multi-million pound budget privately funded by sponsors and well wishers.

The flying display ranged from aerobatics by the elegant Swift glider up to the awesome power and amazing agility of the RAF’s 21st century Typhoon. Seven teams of different performance flew each day, notably the RAF Aerobatic Team ‘The Red Arrows’ who provided an exceptional extra item on Sunday afternoon when the team, led by Wing Commander Jas Hawker, made two low passes along the flight line in formation with a Boeing 747-400 of Virgin Atlantic. Piloted by Captain Geoff Andreasen, Chief Pilot of Virgin’s Boeing fleet, the huge Boeing looked magnificent in close company with the red Hawks, the formation providing a symbolic marking of the 25th anniversary of the airline founded by Richard Branson in June 1984.

Sir Richard Branson, President of Virgin Atlantic said that it was a welcome and valued honour for their birthday celebrations. “I am very proud that one of our fleet Boeing 747’s has performed this flypast at the Biggin Hill Air Fair with the world-famous Red Arrows team” he said.

Colin Hitchins, CEO of Air Fair organiser Air Displays International added: “Not only was the flypast a highlight of this year’s event, it rates very highly amongst the best moments in the show’s 47-year history”.

One hundred years of Naval Aviation was marked by the appearance of three carrier-based types – a Hawker Nimrod from the 1930’s, a Douglas Skyraider of the era of WWII and the DH Sea Vixen from the 60’s and 70’s.

The ‘Blue Eagles’ team of Army Aviation presented their aggressive-looking Apache and Lynx helicopters in a well co-ordinated display that demonstrated the agility of these front line machines.

The RAF’s participation also included fine displays by the Tutor trainer, the twin turbo-prop Kingair used for navigator training, the Hawk lead-in fast jet trainer flown by Flt Lt Matt Barber of 208 Squadron, also the latest Typhoon from the OCU, 29 Squadron.

Two Russian Sukhoi Su26 flown by Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones as the ‘Red Bull Matadors’ team proved once again their mastery in the formation aerobatic art.

The Great War Display Team provided an excellent perspective of air combat in flimsy machines of the 1914 –1918 era with faithful specialist-built replicas of such types as the Royal Aircraft Factory SE5A, Sopwith Pup, the French Nieuport 17 and the German Junkers CL1. Co-ordinated by Robb Metcalfe, their show brought to life the sight and sound of early air warfare.

Marking the centenary year in 2009 of the first crossing of the English Channel by Louis Bleriot, a replica Bleriot monoplane with a 25 HP Anzani engine from Brooklands Museum (Weybridge) was on prominent display in the static park and the focus of much attention.

In the competitions amongst display pilots, the winner were: -

Battle of Britain Sword – awarded to Flt Lt Scott Loughran, pilot of the RAF Typhoon. The judges commented that ‘his display was an exceptional demonstration of the performance and agility of the RAF’s new multi-role combat aircraft’. Flt Lt Loughran is an Instructor with 29 Squadron, the Typhoon OCU at RAF Coningsby. He is shortly due for promotion to Squadron Leader and has been appointed as OC No 6 Squadron at RAF Leuchars.

The Shell Aviation Trophy – awarded to the ‘Red Bull Matadors’ team, Paul Bonhomme and Steve Jones, for their ‘dynamic aerobatic sequences in close formation’ in the two Sukhoi Su26.

The Breitling Trophy – awarded to Robb Metcalfe and the nine pilots of Great War Team for the ‘splendid visual spectacle of early air combat by the variety of types flown by members of the team’.

A ‘Youth Initiative’ brought 1,200 teenagers of ages between 14 – 18 from 28 local schools to Biggin Hill on Friday (26th) to meet representatives of military and civil uniformed services. The RAF’s ‘Red Arrows’ team flew in especially to meet them and talk to them. Major Phil Packer gave a motivational address.

SOLO SPITFIRE SET TO MUSIC SEALS AIR SHOW FINALE

A famous WWII Spitfire flown by one of the UK’s top display pilots will bring the daily flying programme at the Biggin Hill International Air Fair (27th & 28th June) to an emotional close with a low-level display sequence set to music.

Nigel Lamb will grace the skies over Biggin Hill at the controls of Spitfire Mk IX, service number MH434, an aircraft that originally saw action with the Royal Air Force in 1943 and 1944 flying 79 combat missions.

Nigel’s 8-minute sequence at the climax of the day’s flying will be flown to the sound of William Blake’s famous hymn Jerusalem followed by an orchestral version of The Last Post, music that will be heard over the public address system as the aircraft swoops low over the airfield.

KC-135 STRATOTANKER

Monday 01st June 2009

NEWS RELEASE

ADI.08/09

USAF TO FLY STRATOTANKER AT SHOW

The United States Air Force will be showing one of their awesome KC-135 Stratotankers in the daily flying display at the Biggin Hill International Air Fair (27th & 28th June).

The Stratotanker provides a global in-flight refuelling facility for the USAF, also for the US Navy and Marine Corp as well as allied forces within NATO. Based on the Boeing 707 commercial airliner, the massive Stratotanker is powered by four CFM-56 turbofan engines and normally carries a crew of three, the aircraft captain, a co-pilot and a fuelling boom operator. It can remain on station for many hours to provide an in-flight top-up for a wide range of operational aircraft.

The principal method for transferring fuel to a receiving aircraft is through the flying boom, extended rearwards and downwards to enable the pilot to approach and connect quickly with a compatible probe. Some versions of the Stratotanker are fitted with special refuelling pods mounted in the wingtips and extended to allow two aircraft to be refuelled simultaneously.

Large amounts of fuel can be transferred to airborne aircraft in a matter of a few minutes by day or night. Originally a British invention, the business of refuelling all types of aircraft in the air has significantly enhanced operational capability world-wide, a field in which the KC-135 Stratotanker continues to play a powerful and vital role.

Vulcan V-Bomber

Friday 22nd May 2009

NEWS RELEASE

ADI.06/09

VULCAN V-BOMBER BOOKED FOR AIR FAIR 09

The Avro Vulcan B2 V-bomber, airworthy again after more than 10 years of detailed restoration work at a cost in excess of £7M, has been booked to fly at the Biggin Hill International Air Fair on 27th and 28th June. Subject to final tests and safety clearances, it is planned that the massive aircraft will feature in the daily display on both weekend days.

Designed and built by AVRO, the striking delta-wing bomber, designated XH558, was the last of its kind to serve in the Royal Air Force. A total of 136 Vulcans were built including two prototypes and the aircraft was in front line service in various roles for more than 30 years. The aircraft is powered by four Rolls Royce Olympus engines, the same type used to power Concorde.

XH558 has been preserved thanks to an ever-growing list of generous sponsors and supporters. Within the charitable organisation ‘Vulcan to the Sky Trust’ the team of dedicated engineers led by Dr Robert Pleming have received substantial funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund and been backed by over 25,000 individuals world-wide who have contributed to the substantial cost of restoration and preservation.

Based at Bruntingthorpe airfield in Leicestershire, the first flight since the aircraft was de-commissioned in 1993 took place in October 2007. It flew in the display at the SBAC show at Farnborough in 2008 and is expected to feature at shows in the UK and Europe later this year.

Colin Hitchins, CEO of organisers Air Displays International, says that the sight and sound of the famous V-bomber at Biggin Hill would be a highlight of the 2009 show.

“The successful restoration of XH558 to an airworthy condition continues to be an ambitious undertaking by a dedicated and determined group of professional engineers and logistic experts. A whole new generation will benefit by seeing this aircraft perform in the air, while its appearance at Biggin Hill once again after many years will astound our visitors by its size and breathtaking performance” says Colin.

Editorial Notes

- The AVRO Vulcan was designed by Roy Chadwick who also designed the famous Lancaster and later Lincoln 4-engined bombers of the 1940’s.

- Vulcan XH558 was the first B2 version to enter service with the RAF in July 1960 and the last to fly before retirement in 1992 when operated by the Vulcan Display Flight.

- The Vulcan was the only V-bomber to undertake operational bombing sorties. These were during the Falklands campaign in 1982 when squadron aircraft flew five missions, a round-trip flight to the South Atlantic of 7,700 miles.

- During RAF service life, Vulcan aircraft were operated by 617 ‘Dambuster’ squadron who celebrated the 66th anniversary of the Dams raid earlier this month.

WW1 Re-Enacted

Friday 15th May 2009

NEWS RELEASE

ADI05/09

AIR BATTLES OF WW1 RE-ENACTED AT AIR FAIR 09

Thrilling air battles of the First World War (1914 – 1918) will be realistically re-enacted at the Biggin Hill International Air Fair during the weekend of 27th & 28th June by members of the Great War Display Team with their nine superb replica aircraft, each presented in the military colours of the era.

The team includes four SE5A single-seat biplane fighters, a type originally built at the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough. Introduced into service in 1917, the SE5A quickly proved to be fast, versatile and a fine gun platform. It was highly successful in combat in the hands of the air aces of the period, pilots such as Albert Ball, James McCudden and Edward Mannock.

One of the team SE5A’s will be flown by octogenarian pilot Doug Gregory, a veteran of WWII when he flew Beaufighter, Spitfire and Mosquito aircraft. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for skill and courage in the air.

Another famous British aircraft of the period exemplified by the team is the Sopwith Pup, an agile fighter and originally with a 100hp Gnome rotary engine that was introduced into service in 1916. The superb replica is in the colours of the Royal Naval Air Service whose pilots flew alongside their Royal Flying Corps colleagues with distinction.

One of the formidable enemy fighters of the WWI period was the Fokker Dr 1 Triplane. The aircraft was seen as a response to the Sopwith Triplane that had succeeded the Pup. Armed with two forward-firing Spandau machine guns, the Fokker version was highly manoeuvrable and a favourite mount German aces, including the legendary Red Baron, Manfred von Richtofen, who was shot down in combat flying his all red-painted Triplane.

Other team aircraft are the French-designed Nieuport 17 Scout, the only full sized replica flying in Europe. It was one of the classic marques of WWI and was operated by British, French, Belgian, Italian and Russian air services. This replica was the star of the 2006 film ‘Fly Boys’.

The Junkers CL.1 was a sturdy German ground attack aircraft, well ahead of its time as an all-metal monoplane. It was fully armed with a pair of forward-firing Spandau machine guns and a 3rd gun operated by the Observer from the rear cockpit. Two replicas fly in the team.

The sight and sound of the Great War Team in action will capture the days of early air combat when aircraft were made of wood and fabric, aero-engines were underpowered and often unreliable, yet air battles were fought conclusively by brave and courageous airmen. The thrill of combat is accentuated with smoke trails and a lively commentary.

“We are thrilled that the Red Arrows team and Virgin Atlantic will be working closely together to bring this spectacular formation to our Sunday display, a once-in-a lifetime sequence in the great tradition of inspiring displays at this historic airfield” he said.

One of the Team members this year is Flt Lt Mike Ling who flies as Red 7 and as No 2 in the Synchro Pair. Mike was educated at St Olave’s Grammar School in Orpington (Kent) and was an air cadet with 2427 ATC Squadron based at Biggin Hill. He has realised his dream of flying with the Red Arrows from the inspiration of seeing the team fly at the Air Fair when he was a schoolboy in the 1990’s.

NEWS RELEASE

100 YEARS OF NAVAL AVIATION TO BE MARKED AT AIR FAIR 09

One high profile event taking place at the Biggin Hill International Air Fair 2009 (27th & 28th June) will be the marking of 100 years of naval aviation.

The Air Fair will bring some of the Royal Navy’s most famous aircraft for display in the air and on show in the static park. These will include a Hawker Nimrod of the 1930’s, Fairey Swordfish and Supermarine Seafire of the WWII era and a Hawker Sea Hawk, front line jet fighter of the 1950’s and 60’s

Naval pilots of Joint Harrier Command now share responsibility with their RAF counterparts for Harrier operations from land and carrier bases. The battle-winning Sea Harrier was in service with the Fleet Air Arm for 27 years, contributing to over a quarter of a century of the history of naval aviation. This year is the 40th anniversary of Harrier operations and the GR9 version will be flying at the Air Fair.

The Fairey Swordfish Mk 2 is one of only a small number of these outstanding aircraft still remaining, now operated by the RN Historic Flight. Known affectionately as the ‘Stringbag’ because of its fabric, wood and wire construction, the massive biplane powered by a Bristol Pegasus 9-cylinder radial engine was flown by Fleet Air Arm aircrews in several important engagements of the years of WWII.

Notable among these was the night strike in November 1940 by 21 torpedo-carrying Swordfish on the Italian fleet in Taranto harbour, an episode that became a blueprint for a similar strike by the Japanese on the US fleet in Pearl Harbour. Another was the famous chase in May 1941 of the German battleship Bismarck in appalling weather conditions of the North Atlantic, when a torpedo launched by a Swordfish crippled the steering gear of the huge warship and the Home Fleet were able to sink her with gunfire.

The Seafire was a development of the famous Spitfire to enable carrier operations. The version on show, a Seafire 17, was rescued from a scrap-yard and painstakingly restored to airworthy condition by Kennet Aviation. It had seen service in the carrier Ocean in the late 1940’s. The Mk 17 is powered by a Rolls Royce Griffon engine with a 4-bladed propeller. A total of 2570 Seafires were built.

Merlin and Lynx helicopters of the Royal Navy will provide the modern history of the Fleet Air Arm, including the Black Cats helicopter team of two Lynx helicopters from 702 squadron.

“Battle-winning edge can only come from an aviation team that can deliver fighting aircraft from the sea. It is team skill that marks out people in the Fleet Air Arm today” says Rear Admiral Ian Tibbitt, Director General, Safety & Engineering, Royal Navy

'MAITLAND VIEW' RECOGNISES JOCK’S FIFTY YEAR CONTRIBUTION AT BIGGIN HILL AIRPORT

Friday 20th February 2009

ADI.01/09 20th February 2009

NEWS RELEASE

An airport access road that provides one of the finest viewing points at Biggin Hill Airport is to be named ‘Maitland View’ in recognition of the contribution that Squadron Leader Jock Maitland MBE DFC has made to the steady development of the airport over a period of 50 years. Jock Maitland is a former Airport Director and Founder of the high profile International Air Fair series, now in its 47th year.

Maitland View will be officially designated at a special ceremony at the airport on 26th February when the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Denise Reddin, will perform the naming ceremony in the presence of Jock Maitland and his family. The road becomes a link to the newly developed area with a 21st century building for the flying schools.

When construction work on site is complete, Maitland View will incorporate a special area where display boards will tell the history of the famous airfield, tabulate the aviation companies based at the airport and provide details of jobs and careers in aviation aimed principally at young people.

Andrew Walters, Chairman of Biggin Hill Airport Ltd says that the recognition is timely.

“ The transition of Biggin Hill from an RAF fighter station to being a modern commercial airport was started by Jock Maitland 50 years ago this year and his influence as President of Air Displays International continues to this day” he said.

When Croydon Airport was finally closed in 1959, Jock Maitland agreed to take on the management of RAF Biggin Hill as a civilian airport. He coordinated the transfer of the very substantial non-airline aviation interests from Croydon to Biggin Hill and made a great success of it for the users. Later, in 1973 when the Council acquired the airport from the MoD, Jock operated it for the Council as Airport Director for 15 years.

Jock introduced the first in the series of International Air Fairs at Biggin Hill in 1963 and sustained the RAF’s ‘Battle of Britain Open Days’ at the historic airfield for many years. Forty year later he was awarded the Jeffrey Quill Medal by the Air League in recognition of a lifetime’s work promoting air-mindedness among young people. In 2007, Jock received the MBE in the Birthday Honours ‘for services to aviation’ and went to Buckingham Place to receive his award from Her Majesty The Queen in November of that year.

Flying is a passion that Jock has always wanted to share with others and his company Air Displays International was formed with this aspect in mind. Since its formation in the 1960’s, ADI has presided over one of the biggest and most respected air shows in Europe.

A fine example of the inspiration that the Air Fair brings for youngsters will unfold at the Air Fair in June this year. Many years ago, a young Michael Ling stood on the display flight line with his parents and watched the RAF’s ‘Red Arrows’ fly their dynamic routines. This year, Flight Lieutenant M Ling RAF will be returning to Biggin Hill flying as Red 7 in the team that inspired his aviation career.

In a 15-year career in the Royal Air Force that commenced in 1942, Jock flew the F86 Sabre jet fighter in action during the Korean conflict of the early 1950’s when on an exchange posting with the United States Air Force. He flew 77 combat missions, shot down two Mig-15 enemy aircraft and was awarded the American equivalent of the Distinguished Flying Cross for skill and bravery in the air.

Later he commanded 249 Squadron RAF and saw action in several theatres of war in the Middle East in the 1950’s including the Suez campaign flying DH Vampire and Venom aircraft. With his considerable combat experience, he was appointed as an instructor at the Day Fighter Leader School at RAF West Raynham where he flew the Hawker Hunter. He retired in the rank of Squadron Leader in 1957.
